Ecclesiastes 3: 1-14
Sunday morning I was glued to what the Lord was speaking through this man, scribbling down all the main points all over my bible as he dug in to the word, going deeper and deeper. I was writing and nodding and thinking to myself, ‘Wow, this is SO good!”. I love when those moments happen and then throughout the week those very scribbles and thoughts and verses come full circle to a number of people in your path. In those moments I knew that the Lord was doing something bigger. That exact sermon is meant for so many more than those in my day to day life, so I am sharing it here, for all of you to hear as well.
Life has a variety of seasons, you know what I’m talking about. Sometimes things coasting along and everything is fine then all of a sudden an storm hits and life pulls you down. You don’t feel like you can get out of the wind and rain and so you search for answers, search for hope and search for the sun to shine through those thick clouds above you. We all go through these moments. Some of our storms seem greater than others, some of us feel like we are in a never ending storm and some of us are bracing for the storm to hit. I’m here to tell you that how you feel during those times, it’s all okay.
In the Word it tells us that there are seasons for every activity under the sun (Ecclesiastes 3:1).
2. a time to be born and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to uproot,
3. a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build,
4. a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,
5. a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain,
6. a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away,
7. a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak,
8. a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.
When you look at this list, if you’re like me you think to yourself, “Well I like this one, but don’t give me that other one. I’ll take the laughter but don’t give me the weeping. Oh please don’t make me uproot right now.”. God gives us these seasons so that we draw closer to Him.
Have you found that while you are coasting along on the ‘good’ side of this list that you aren’t necessarily as deep in your prayer life as you should be? I mean, things are going well, so why should we be leaning on Him as much? I know I am guilty of this, things come up and things are going well so I’ll just skip my quiet time for the day. Or my marriage is happy and we are communicating so well together that we don’t need that extra time to go to the Lord. But man, when things go south, our knees hit the ground pretty darn quickly don’t they?
We try to control it for as long as we can and then we realize that it’s not in our control. We get angry or question why God would allow certain things to happen or wonder what the whole purpose is anyway. But deep down, we know have to give it to Him. There are no time-outs in these seasons, only prayer & faith through it. Here’s a little secret for you: Being successful in these seasons is being able to get through them. That’s it. No one said you had to be happy about it or joyful through it, but by going to the Lord in prayer & getting through it, YOU are successful.
These seasons in life, you will never fully discern the purpose of them while you’re in it. That’s where your FAITH comes in. Having FAITH that the Lord has an eternal purpose that’s bigger than you can even imagine. You may never even learn what this eternal purpose is. Having that FAITH that the Lord will absolutely bring purpose helps us to not feel so lost. Did you know that the Hebrew meaning of ‘purpose’ is to bend or curve. So during these seasons the Lord said that there is a purpose – an eternal purpose. So think of it like this, the Lord is bending / curving you back to Him during the seasons.
God’s Word is Designed for Action
Look at verse 14:
I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that men will revere him.
You may be going through a season in your life right now. You may not understand why you are going through it, just know there is an eternal purpose to this season. The Lord wants you to continue to go to Him. Seek out your friends who can pray for you and help encourage you through it. Dig in the word, as it was designed for action. And lastly, pray. Pray your heart out. Do whatever it is that you have to do, God already knows what you are thinking. He already knows if you are angry or hurt or afraid, so just tell Him. He loves you and wants to hold you close.
If you need prayer, I’d love to pray for you. You can send your request to my email at: firstname.lastname@example.org
