1. Lack of Sleep.
Have you ever noticed a cold or infection pops up when you haven’t been getting enough zzz’s? There are a lot of studies showing that those who get the recommended amount of sleep each night have a stronger protection against the illness. Lack of sleep can also lead to higher levels of stress hormones which leads to inflammation in the body.
Researches haven’t pin-pointed exactly how sleep boosts the immune system, but it’s very clear that getting enough sleep (7-9hrs for an adult) is a key component for good health.
2. Not Exercising.
Did you know that if you don’t exercise regularly, you’re more likely to get a cold? Exercise produces something called – endorphins. Endorphines are the ‘feel-good’ hormone that can help you sleep better. Both of those are great for your immune system.
Trying to get some moderate exercise in every day is key. Try for a 30 minute walk. Just 30 minutes a day can help your immune system fight off infection.
3. Diet lacking in key nutrients.
Excess sugar curbs your immune system cells that attack bacteria. These effects lasts for a few hours after downing a couple of sugary drinks! Doesn’t that just blow your mind? By eating more fruits and vegetables that are rich in nutrients like vitamins C & E, plus beta-carotene and zinc will help bring in those key nutrients.
Getting a variety of brightly colored fruits and vegetables is a great way to keep track of what you eat. I like to call it, ‘eat the rainbow’. Things like berries, citrus fruits, kiwi, apples, red grapes, kale or spinach, onions, garlic, sweet potatoes and carrots are all amazing and filled with fantastic vitamins and nutrients.
If you don’t have a great diet, taking a daily multivitamin is a smart way to fill in those gaps. I highly recommend Vitalizer as a daily regimen. This vitamin pack is loaded with key nutrients necessary for a healthy immune system. Based on 12 clinical studies, Vitalizer provides vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and healthy probiotics — using a patented delivery system specially designed to enhance absorption of key nutrients in your body. Vitalizer comes in a to-go pack, making it easier to take along with you while you’re out!
Other foods that are great for your immune system include garlic, which has been shown to help fight viruses and bacteria. I like to make chicken soup with bone broth if we do come down with a cold or the flu.
Everyone has stress. Some of you may even not even realize that your body is under stress. Chronic stress can make you more vulnerable to illnesses, from colds to even serious diseases. This type of daily stress can actually cause your body to have a steady stream of stress hormones that suppresses your immune system. Talk about a recipe for disaster.
Managing your stress is key. Taking up meditation, prayer, slowing down, building strong relationships with others and working out are all ways that can help alleviate some of that stress. Easing up your stress will help lower your stress hormone and can help you start sleeping better!
