Have you noticed this new trend lately of people pushing their protein shake everywhere? I know I was completely guilty of this for the last few years, because, I drank them every day. But I’ve changed over the last few months and I’m here to answer your question, “Should I be drinking a protein shake daily?”.
The quick answer is, No. No, you do not NEED to be drinking a protein shake every day. But, what’s the fun in such a quick answer without an explanation. Plus, all those daily protein shake drinkers are probably going to be pretty mad at me thinking that their customers will read this and opt out of their monthly shake plans. (Don’t you worry your little hearts.) So let me indulge you in why I don’t think you need to drink a daily protein shake.
Let me first start with this, I was a daily protein shake drinker for YEARS. Did you read that? YEARS! That’s how I lost weight after having my girls in 2012. That’s how I built the base of my business in the early days. And quite frankly it really was the best solution for me during that season of my life. Well, the seasons have since changed and I have learned some things over the last few months. While I do love my protein shakes (yes, I do still drink them), I have more time on my hands than I did in those early baby/toddler years. With that extra time, I’m now able to teach my children about a well-balanced diet. Yes, they see me drink my shakes here and there, but they don’t think that’s only thing Mommy has for breakfast or lunch.
For me, at this stage, it’s important for me to teach my kids how to make healthy meal choices. They are able to see me make a healthy wrap, scrambled eggs with veggies or even make a healthy shake now and again. They see balance.
Now, those of you who base a lot of your income on selling these protein shakes, please don’t get all in a tissy over this. I’m not saying that protein shakes are NOT beneficial. I definitely think they serve a purpose – most certainly! What I’m saying is, I don’t think EVERYONE needs to have one on a daily basis. I’d much prefer someone take a daily multivitamin and have a well rounded diet.
So I guess the question you might ask now is, “When SHOULD someone be drinking a protein shake?”.
Here are times when I think it’s beneficial to have a protein shake:
- When you are starting your weight loss journey and need a quick meal that you don’t need to “think” about, it’s one less meal that you have to prep.
- If you are not going to eat a meal at all (insert busy moms or people who often only have coffee for breakfast) or someone who will choose an unhealthy meal or drive through option – a protein shake is definitely a better option to have.
- After you work out and need a balanced meal to fuel your body afterwards. A protein shake is a great choice for muscle recovery (if you have one with added leucine it’s even better).
Don’t be fooled in to thinking you have to have a protein shake in your daily routine, you definitely don’t. On the flip side of that, don’t knock it as something that can’t be helpful for you either.
So, are you a daily shake drinker? Or are you like me and like to just have them on hand for a nice & quick meal?
